I’ve always been fascinated by Marvel Comics’ line of “What If…” stories. What if Spiderman had joined the Fantastic Four, What if Doctor Doom was a good guy, things like that. Meanwhile, I’m much more of a DC fanboy as I collect classic stories of Batman, Green Lantern, and The Flash as well as non-mainstream titles like Secret Society of Super Villians and Brave and Bold Presents. With that in mind, one of my favorite people on Twitter is the current writer of Batman, Scott Snyder. From time to time, as many celebrities on twitter have a tendency to, Scott will answer questions fielded by his fans. Today’s topic: Who would you like to see in a Marvel/DC crossover.
Now this has been done before. In 1996-1997 a huge event called Amalgam took place across the two universes and spawned a whole new cast of cult-classic characters such as Dark Claw (Wolverine and Batman), Iron Lantern (duh), and Super Soldier (Captain America and Superman). The books, surprisingly, were actually pretty fun to read as they tried to take themselves seriously while simultaneously the reader is perfectly aware of how ridiculous they really are. There was an overarching plot to the stories as well which is now reprinted in a trade paperback. Regardless, the books are worth reading even if just to see how one character would interact with another from a totally different, equally revered, universe.
So when Scott’s reply came over the twitterverse, “Are you kidding? Alfred [The Butler] would kick Galactus’ BUTT!” I couldn’t help but visualize Alfred standing over a crippled Galactus. The image stuck with me throughout the day such that when I arrived home, my sketchbook was already in my hand. What resulted was, in my opinion quite funny. The black and white version is a bit better in my opinion as the colour one seems a bit cartoony but I’m proud of it.
